Those who ascend to positions of leadership often soon discover that being there can either be uplifting, personally and professionally enriching, and substantive, or on the contrary, can soon become drudgery overwhelmingly. To impactfully be transformed to, and develop into, a real and meaningful leader, it is quite essential to enjoy being a leader. After more than three decades of knowing, qualifying, cultivating, training and consulting to over a thousand leaders and/ or potential ones, I have discovered that it is indeed the ability to actually enjoy oneself in that position, and all the accompanying responsibilities and challenges that come with being there, that distinguishes the rarely seen superior and truly impactful leaders from the rest of the pack.
1, The process begins with a mindset and a desire for real empathy. When one cares deeply and will take the time and effort to put yourself in other’s place, the focus becomes on enriching the experience for all involved. When a leader positively impacts others, it drives more enjoyment his way! The process of leadership must not be approached as if it is a mystery, but rather the aim must be to learn, know, understand, appreciate and take timely action based on being prepared because one knows what leading entails.
2. Are you a needs oriented individual who makes an effort to develop superior natural people skills? Do you choose to attempt to lead merely by rote and repetition, doing the same old, same old repeatedly, or do you develop and use a well formulated nuanced approach?
3. What is your goal or personal motive or motivation? Is it to focus on getting all factions of your organisation to join together to unify for the common interest and overall essential mission of the group? Is your manner more jolly (as opposed to grumpy) in nature, and do you provide the reasons and justifications for all potential stakeholders to care more deeply and get more involved?
